Bangkok to Siem Reap

Bangkok to Siem Reap by Bus

Bangkok to Siem Reap

There are not many choices for travel between the two countries.

Which mean most people take the coach or the aircraft. In recent times are also talkings  to resurrect the railway but it’s not done yet. On the road, it is a cheap trip from Bangkok's Mo Chit Bus terminal to Siem Reap which is not fast at all but it works similar to Phnom Penh . Both destinations are also served with daily flights by Air Asia (from the old Don Muang Airport) and Cambodian Airline.

To make the journey take the Siem Reap bus at Mo Chit terminal in Bangkok at 9.00, 1.00 pm and 4 pm (that can change so better take the one in the morning to have flexibility). The next best thing to do is to start at Suvarnabhumi Airport, they have a bus to Aranyaphratet at 7am and at the weekend additionally in the afternoon. It costs less than $ 10,-, the bus is excellent and since it starts at the airport it passes the Bangkok traffic mess, uses the rail link to come to Suvarnabhumi.

Leaving Thailand for Cambodia with the coach.

There are several flights from Bangko  is easy in general there is no need to do any pre-booking just get to Mo Chit bus terminal in Bangkok  (about 5 km away from the BTS terminal) they have several coaches every day. In the morning (about 9 am)and early afternoon (about 2 pm), they have a direct bus. Other possibilities are taken any coach to the border and change there to another bus or a joint taxi.  It is is a rather cheap trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap by bus but not fast at all only to Phnom Penh it’s even worst. To get around this problem take one of the daily flights by Air Asia (from the old Don Muang Airport) or Cambodian Airline.

The Siem Reap bus starts at Mo Chit terminal in Bangkok at 9.00, 1.00 pm and 4 pm (that can change so better take the one in the morning to have flexibility). The best actually is to start at Suvarnabhumi Airport, they have a bus to Aranyaphratet at 7am and at the weekend additionally at 2 pm. It costs less than $ 10,-, the bus is excellent and since it starts at the airport it passes the Bangkok traffic mess, uses the rail link to come to Suvarnabhumi.
Passing the Thai Cambodian Border
Photos of border crossing
The coach from Mo Chit stops one time at a petrol station before the border to get some food (there are also restaurants), use the toilet and whatever.

Keep in mind you can tell the driver at any time he should stop when there is some urgency since there is a toilet on board just use it.

Also, advance visa has no benefits since you need to follow the usual procedure anyway just enter the office pay your visa fee and proceed to the immigration which is in another building further up.

Don’t listen to the guys who enter the bus shortly before the border and pretending they are officials and help with the visa, they are nothing they just trying to milk you. There is only one place for the visa and that is beyond the Thai immigration.

When buying the visa they always try some tricks.

With the money and also try cheating when returning small change. Bring 2 passport photos with you because if you don’t have they try to blackmail and only will give in when paying the double of normal. The next hurdle is the immigration as usual because of too many tourists and not enough staff.

In general, people are friendly but it needs to be vigilant the two most common tricks are with the photos and get you to pay more than $ 20,-. They might tell they accept also Bath and want 1000,- (almost the double that in dollars) which they hope the tourist in a rush won’t think about it.

If your coach ends at the passport control on the Cambodian side the best is to go together with one or two other and take a taxi, that's relatively cheap when more than one and much faster than the bus. It also allows stopping when needed, maybe for a great photo shot. Take the seat belt since the behavior of the people is hair-raising and with total carelessness. It’s even worse than in Thailand where road travel can be truly dangerous. As an example, on Phuket Island alone they have around 200.000 road accidents every year, this is a grotesque number and most people actually having accidents are motorbike driver and on the 7 days at the long Songkran weekend there are about 400 people killed on the road which  is incredible.
