Cambodia Beaches

The Seafront  at Sihanoukville and Koh Kong

Waterfronts at the South China Sea
T he country has also other attractive destinations besides of Angkor Wat, one of it are fine beaches in the south around Sihanoukville just check the map at the side and there are also other things to do

Although not as developed as Thailand or Malaysia there is nothing missing but be selective since often the hotels won't bring what they promise on the pictures.

Currently (2016) the best accessible Cambodian beaches are around Sihanoukville, naturally, there are more everywhere in the south but there is no infrastructure, not even roads. The seafronts are the real example that there is more in the country beside of temples, monument, and Phnom Penh.

Take a bus from Phnom Penh and a taxi in Sihanoukville or hire a scooter, many waterfronts won't have a tuk-tuk available and other wouldn't drive there because the road is too bad.

Cambodia Beach Map Sihanoukville

How to get there

The Khmer are the only people on mother earth who won’t allow Islam in and that is good so. They really had enough trouble in the past nobody whant's similar lunatic in again as it was with the Khmer Rouge since it is the same only a bit more subtle.

Now there is no much choice to move down south take the bus and once you arrive rent a scooter. There are 2 main roads from the capital to the coast one straight to the south ending up in Kep / Kampot where the Bokor National Park is and Sihanoukville with several beach fronts having white and yellow sand and another route through the wilderness of the Cardamon Mountains with the waterfalls of Sri Ambel that is straight to the south-west to Krong (city) Koh Kong.

The south China Sea beaches in Cambodia are still exotic by any means, ok, maybe you are not alone a’ la Tom Hanks in “cast away” but when floating to the remote islands off Sihanoukville the difference is not so much. What is more boring as hanging around in a remote place, island or not, just watching the sun moving over the sky, get sunburn and so on? It could be interesting for a few days but after, forget it, imagine when there is no beer in the fridge, it’s sickening isn’t it?

Ochheuteal Beach
These South China Sea waterfronts are something unique with panoramic views affordable hotels / resorts and guesthouses with a jungle backdrop, waterfalls a relaxed atmosphere and nobody bothers you as long as you keep civilization up. This is around the whole coast, entering from Thailand at Koh Kong all the way to Vietnam in the east via Kep / Kampot / Sihanoukville, it's rather compact and you could do beach hopping along the whole South China Sea.

There are enough accommodations, usually clean, most even with the internet and great stuff to eat, dozens of charcoal grills line the beaches every evening and they grill chicken, pork, fish and vegetables.

These are idyllic ASEAN beach destinations without being overcrowded from tourist hordes. Fine for snorkeling and driving with clearest warm waters and sandy beaches. Most tourists today come into Cambodia or "Khmer Country" for a couple of days to sniff the rich culture of Angkor Wat and Thom maybe make a tour to Phnom Penh and walk through the Kings Palace but there are not many to make it to the south where the beautiful coastline with spectacular waterfalls in the Bokor National Park is.

Start at Sihanoukville Beaches

Ochheuteal Beach is the most famous and even has some nightlife area it's not like like Patong Phuket but they try to create a pleasure atmosphere in the night. It has also the longest waterfront and runs into 2 more sand strips. Sihanoukville is also the starting point for scuba diving, cruises to the islands in front with “fairy tale” environments just like in the movie with total privacy and seclusion and definitely family friendly. Having millions of shells still  around if there were tourists there wouldn't be much left.

Cambodia is for sure an interesting beach destination in an exotic destination such as  the South China Sea, what is missing is the infrastructure. Actually many people, especially backpacker might think ok that's exactly what I want if it so gives it a try.

If you intend to have some holiday there check the weather first because is changing quite a lot and sometimes storms are quite strong especially during monsoon.

A good example how it could be done is the front of Sokha resort at Sihanoukville this is one of the best Cambodia beaches naturally the resort also has the highest prices, all above $ 100,-. This vacation playground is currently (2016) the best in the country. It somehow is a copy of the Regent Cha Am Thailand.

Actually this is one seafront with two sectors, the first is a mixture of boulder and sand and the second section is totally sandy. It's a little version of Patong in Phuket with bars, restaurants, jet skis and other activities. Looks very family friendly a real pleasure spot on the South China Sea but no go-go bars and girls.

Countless beaches on the islands and the coasts are around and probably the reasons why many holiday maker choose ASEAN countries for their most precious time of the year. Most are beautiful waterfronts and some are definitely "top notch".

Here you will find breathtaking pictures of beautiful seafronts and be sure not every Khmer beach looks the same, there are many variants the most attractive probably are where light yellow sand blends with huge limestone bolder, and gravel waterfronts are rather rare.

Ochheuteal Beach
Ochheuteal Beach Photos
Ochheuteal Beach is the premier beach destination in the country around 3 km long and extending into Serendipity Waterfront to the east. It’s a bit like Patong Beach in Phuket but on a much lower scale, also the sand area is quite narrow.

There are definitely better Sihanoukville beaches around but in the evening Ochheuteal is the number one with dozens of restaurant, bars and beach barbecue shack style restaurants serving fresh seafood, beef, pork and more.

Many guesthouses and hotels are lining the streets behind, when taking accommodation don’t be shy using a guesthouse, because many places running under that label are better than a hotel, the reason is, guesthouses pay less tax than hotels so it is simply an economic decision, in any case, check the place first, for one of them we have done this try this, it’s the best guesthouse – hotel deal in the city
