A pretty spot in the Andaman Sea of south Thailand
The small archipelago consists of Phi-Phi Don, Ley & Ko Yung (Mosquito Island). Many years ago only a Muslim fishing community, after the islands got developed into a international tourist destination.

The latest exposure to international movie shooting was the the movie "the Beach" with Leonardo Di Caprio, read more about this further below. A few smaller limestone rocks and "Bamboo Island" which is very small and flat with plenty of sand. This spot in the Andaman Sea emerged from a small Muslim fishing community into a prime travel destination due to a great attractive environment. The final push to the islands on the world travel radar was for sure the filmmaking of "The Beach" with Leonardo Di Caprio.

There is no need to explain a lot, this place is great, have a swim, a bath in the sun, maybe a dive in the emerald sea. Do some snorkeling in the warm tropical water around and have a look for the fish they are always curious on this  2 leg black creatures with the air bubbles who try to watch them, the underwater world  is of great beauty.

The area around Phuket and the Islands of the Andaman Sea coast to the north are among the world's top ten scuba diving locations. With archipelagos like Similan Islands, further north is the Surin Archipelago offer exotic culture, adventure in the deep blue with sting ray, whale shark, rainbow colored coral banks, unforgettable food, making a vacation here  means a good time.

Although as with most small islands it gets boring quick unless you are a guy like Leonarda Di Caprio, they brought him in with the helicopter every day from Phuket when the movie was shot.

Some basic data:

Phi Phi Don is the bigger and only habituated island. Phi-Phi Leh is the smaller one to the south where they made the movie "The Beach" at Maya Bay. Only day tourists come there since there is no accommodation.

How to travel to the Phi-Phi Islands

Phi Phi Photos
Several Ferries from Phuket and Krabi's Ao Nang leave every day.

The start at Phuket's Rasada Pier around 8am, actually there are many ferries. Some big ones such as shown here and some smaller ones of the speedboat type, they move faster.

But the bigger ships are more interesting, first, what does it matter if you are one more hour on the water and second they make a little detour via the other islands and places, that is Maya Beach, slowly  passing Viking Cave and some limestone ravines with small beaches it's somehow a free sightseeing trip. Other ferries are starting at Krabi's Ao Nang and some hotels at Ko Lanta also offer day trips to PP Island and the Trang Archipelago.

Phi-Phi Don is the island with the hotels and other accommodations on it and you only have the choice to stay there there is no regulation like on the Tarutao Islands where you can camp on the beach. Don't arrive here without an accommodation booking since there are not many and the place is quickly full try to find something with a beach around.

Also be aware of the usual crooks who hang around and pretend to help to bring you to a hotel etc. they will only bring you to a lousy place which will overcharge you because the person who brings you there will demand commission from them and you will pay this, these gangster methods are everywhere in Thailand.

Geographically the archipelago belong to Krabi province

Once you settle in your hotel or resort it might be useful to hire a longtail boat and move around. Actually, there is no other way to have a look around beside of doing a hike up to the viewpoint. The longtail boat guy already know where to bring you on the sightseeing trip and if you want to stop somewhere just tell him, there are many beautiful small beaches nestled between the limestone ravines and rock, don't miss it and don't be shy to tell if you want to stop somewhere, since you pay.

Don't make a Phi-Phi Island tour in the morning since the crowd is around.

They come with everything which swims from all around southern Thailand carrying the tourists from one spot to another.

When you take a longtail make sure it has a roof even if it is a flimsy one anyway but it protects from the sun. Making the trip without this shelter you will be badly burnt afterward.

The rest of Krabi Province is to the east and Phang Nga is to the north. At the Krabi, mainland side is more pretty spots to explore, such as the famous Railay Beach at Ao Nang and other.

The mighty bizarre-molded stalactite islands in the north materialize out of the emerald colored waters. Somewhere further up is “James Bond” island where they made -The man with the golden colt-, today a busy tourist destination.

If you are on a ride with a longtail boat to find a great beach also have a splash into the pleasant tropical water. Just tell the boat guy to stop where you like and jump, but leave the shoes on since there are plenty of razor-sharp corals down there and a cut plus maybe an infection is the last you need on your vacation.

Famous Maya Beach

I would say instead of all these manipulated protests against the film shooting of " The Beach ", they should have praised Mr. Di Caprio and the production team to shoot the film at Maya Beach.

Some dirty minded  people manipulating the kid's protest ( about hundred of them in Phuket Town right in front of the Robinson Department Store against the Maya Beach filmmaking) actually the pupils didn't even know why they protested but they got a free afternoon from the school and the teachers big headlines in the newspaper the next day just spreading lies.

What was the reason? The film crew planted several palm trees on Maya Beach to make it appear more pretty. They removed them after the shooting was over. The fact is, people cut down palm trees everywhere on Phuket Island and around when they pull up a new beach resort without any complaint. The strange regulation stipulates that Palm Trees are not "real trees" because to cut trees is officially not allowed. There are sooo many lies and cheats around it's not nice at all.
